|After 65 Years a Very Young 23rd Series Deluxe Eight Club Sedan|
Jeff and Bailey acquired this Packard 23rd Series Club Sedan about three years ago. Other distractions prevented this beautiful car from getting its due attention until recently. When obtained the car was is overall great condition both mechanically and cosmetically. Even so, among the items recently addressed are buffing to a high shine the clear coat paint, which was in the original correct color, Cornet Blue, painting interior and trunk floors, renewing carpets and bench seat upholstery.
The 120 inch wheel base Deluxe Eight Club Sedan is powered by a 135 horsepower, 288 CID engine through a three speed manual transmission with overdrive.
Amazingly, after sixty-five years the car has accumulated only 28,000 miles since new. An examination of title records and maintenance documentation reveal the interesting history starting with the owner, Jane Stoughton Mathewson, who first received the car in Ohio. Jane Mathewson was the widow of inaugural Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson (1880-1925). In 1952 the car was titled in Pennsylvania. Jane Mathewson owned the car at her death in 1967 at the age of 87. Over the years the car passed through many collector owners. First Perne Miller. then Robert Woolmer and Natale Carbone. all of western Pennsylvania and then Bob Abbott of New Jersey. The accumulation, or rather slow accumulation, of mileage is illustrated by the following: March, 1967 service station tag from Bowersox Sunoco, Lewisburg PA with 16,000 miles; October, 1974 service station tag from Millers Atlantic, Irwin PA with 22,000 miles; ownership of Natale Carbone in 1981 with 26,000 miles; April, 2012 sold from the estate of Bob Abbott with 28,000 miles. And now in the hands of Jeff and Bailey, Lone Star Packards members, at that mileage.
